    are you utilizing SMVI backups or have VSC + SC 2.0 enabled?  if you have SC 2.0 enabled then upgrading to SC 4.0 is built into the product and is documented in the Install Guide.   Now if your using SMVI based backups then we have a tool on our community tool chest site that migrates the data.
